[s17] Sen. Banks: Legislation to Support Microbreweries Passes the Senate

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (Feb. 5, 2013) — Two bills authored by State Sen. Jim Banks (R-Columbia City) to support local microbreweries today passed the Senate. Both passed by a vote of 41-8.

Senate Bill 100 and Senate Bill 401 would allow a craft brewery to sell its beer at nonprofit farmers’ markets and trade shows. Currently, microbreweries may only sell their product as the proprietor of a restaurant or directly to another permitted retailer, dealer or consumer’s residence.

“Microbreweries are increasingly popular small businesses, and these bills will give them more opportunities for growth,” Banks said. “There are over 50 licensed microbreweries in Indiana that have created over 1,000 jobs, and this is continuing to grow. My legislation will provide a new avenue for brewers to showcase their craft and find new customers.”

The bills now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration. Rep. Ed Clere (R-New Albany) is the sponsor of both bills.
