[s12] Senate Proposal to Protect Constitutional Rights to Hunt, Fish Passes Committee
Start Date: 2/5/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 2/5/2013
Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (Feb. 4, 2013) – An initiative authored by State Sens. Brent Steele (R-Bedford) and Carlin Yoder (R-Middlebury) to protect Hoosiers’ rights to hunt and fish passed unanimously out of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources today.

Senate Joint Resolution 7 is a proposal to amend Indiana’s constitution to guarantee residents the right to hunt, fish, harvest game and engage in agricultural production of meat and dairy. If passed by the General Assembly this year, the proposed amendment will go before voters statewide in 2014.

“Indiana is an agriculture state, and many Hoosiers rely on these types of activities every day to make a living,” Steele said. “Fishing, hunting and farming are fundamental parts of Indiana’s heritage, and worth preserving.”

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, seventeen states have passed similar proposals and guaranteed these rights to residents.

“This resolution was heavily favored by our state’s agriculture community and the Indiana Farm Bureau,” said Yoder, who chairs the Agriculture and Natural Resources committee. “I grew up hunting and fishing, and enjoy being able to teach my kids the skills I’ve learned over the years. By passing this resolution, we can ensure that future generations will be allowed to do the same.”

SJR 7 passed out of committee 7-0 and now moves to the full Senate for further consideration. For an up-to-date copy of the resolution, click here.
