Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 31, 2013) —Legislation authored by State Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle) to support military families passed the Senate this week with a unanimous vote. It now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration.

Senate Bill 165 would expand eligibility for certain veterans’ property tax deductions to deceased veterans’ surviving spouses. The legislation would also allow veterans with higher-value homes to qualify for the deductions.

“Veterans and their spouses both make incredible sacrifices for our country,” Holdman said. “The purpose of this bill is to thank them for their service and provide help to their families. With the unemployment rate for post-9/11 veterans at 12 percent, these heroes deserve our help and thanks.”

Twelve senators joined Holdman’s efforts and were added as coauthors. The House sponsor is Rep. Dan Leonard (R-Huntington).
