Arnold bill expanding benefits for families of highway workers passes Senate

Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS—The Indiana Senate recently passed legislation co-authored by State Senator Jim Arnold (D-LaPorte) that would expand benefits for family members of state employees who die in the line of duty. The proposal stems from a number of Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) workers who have died as the result of accidents within highway work zones.

“As a former INDOT sub-manager, I know and realize the conditions highway workers experience,” said Sen. Arnold. “This bill serves to make sure that when those workers lose their life on the job, their families are adequately compensated.”

Senate Bill (SB) 324 would raise benefit amounts from $50,000 to $100,000 for employees who die while in the line of duty. The committee also approved an amendment naming dependent stepchildren as beneficiaries if the spouse of the deceased is no longer living.

After unanimously passing the Senate Committee on Pensions and Labor, and the full Senate by a vote of 47-2, SB 324 moves on for consideration by the House of Representatives.

Sen. Arnold represents District 8 in the Indiana State Senate which encompasses the majority of La Porte County including the City of LaPorte and the eastern part of Michigan City. It also includes western St. Joseph County and Davis, Oregon, Washington, Center and Jackson townships in Starke County.
