Pushing Through the 2013 Legislative Session

Researching and proposing new bills, working with the new governor’s administration and addressing the issues that matter most to Hoosiers are just a few things I am currently working on and will continue to work on throughout session. Each week, I plan to share with you updates from the Statehouse so that you can stay up-to-date with our progress and accomplishments.

The bills I have authored or co-authored will help our community and state address areas of concern for Hoosiers. House Bill (HB) 1068, a bill I co-authored, was the first bill to be passed out of the House this session, beginning what is sure to be a positive and productive time for our Legislature.

Rep. Bob Cherry (R-Greenfield) authored HB 1068 giving farmers with a valid driver’s license the ability to operate tractor-trailers from their fields to their farms without obtaining a commercial driver’s license. The Indiana Department of Transportation fully endorses this bill, and it passed through the House with unanimous support.  I am curious to hear your thoughts on this subject, so please feel free to contact me with comments or questions.

The Legislature continues to be laser-focused on improving the education system in Indiana for all Hoosiers and getting people back to work.  House Bill 1002, authored by Speaker of the House Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis), aims to establish the Indiana Career Council, a group dedicated to fostering collaboration and cohesion between Indiana’s education and workforce development organizations.

The Career Council will make recommendations to the General Assembly concerning changes to the state’s education, job skills, and career training systems to increase coordination and information sharing among state, local and private agencies, groups and associations involved in these issues.

With this bill, which has bipartisan support, the council will match the education and skills training provided by the state and work with the current and future needs of the state’s job market to provide employers with an abundance of qualified workers.  Hoosiers all across Indiana will benefit from this proposed legislation as it translates directly into economic growth and development for our state.

We remain focused on the important issues at hand, but an open dialogue is key to good public policy. I will continue pursuing what is in the best interest of our community and, as always, I encourage you to contact me concerning any issues or questions you have this session.  I am available by email at h25@in.gov or by telephone at (317) 234-2993.
