[ISP] Four Year Old Injured in Lake County Crash

Entry Description

Lake County – This morning, at approximately 5:20 a.m., officers from the Indiana State Police responded to a single vehicle crash on I-80 near the 7.4 mile marker, which injured a four-year-old Gary, IN, boy.

The preliminary crash investigation by Indiana State Police Corporal Fred Blohm revealed that Dale Pompy, 23, Gary, IN, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Venture minivan eastbound on Interstate 80 near the 7.4 mile marker. For an undetermined reason, the minivan traveled off the south side of the interstate. The van then re-entered the roadway, turned sideways, and rolled twice before coming to rest on its roof.

Evidence indicates that Jordan Pompy, 4, Gary, IN, a passenger in the van, was not properly restrained. The boy purportedly made contact with the road surface during the crash. The investigation revealed that a booster seat was inside the vehicle, but it was allegedly not properly secured with a seat belt.

Jordan Pompy was transported by ambulance to Northlake Methodist Hospital and then airlifted to UIC Comer Children’s Hospital, in Chicago. He suffered a head injury along with abrasions and lacerations to his body. Dale Pompy sustained minor cuts in the crash. Jordan is his son.

Dale Pompy was issued citations for a child restraint violation and operating a vehicle with a suspended operator’s license, after having a prior conviction for operating a vehicle with a suspended license.

This is an ongoing investigation, but at this time neither the use of alcohol nor narcotics is suspected as having contributed to this crash.

Corporal Blohm was assisted at the crash scene by the Gary Fire Department.
