Entry Description

Putnam County—The Indiana State Police Putnamville District is currently investigating a motorcycle crash on US 40 near County Road 625 West in Putnam County. The crash was the result of the driver losing control of the cycle while fleeing the Brazil City Police Department. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene and a female passenger was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Preliminary investigation revealed at 9:49P.M. a Brazil City Police officer attempted to stop a red, 1996 Honda RF 3 motorcycle eastbound on Pinckley Street near Murphy Avenue for 57 miles-per-hour in a 25 mph zone. The cycle continued eastbound at speeds near 100 mph and then turned north on County Road 200 East continuing northbound to US 40. The cycle then turned eastbound on US 40 with Clay County Sheriff’s deputies and Brazil City Police units in pursuit. Speeds maintained around 100 mph as officers pursued the motorcycle into Putnam County. At 9:55 P.M. on US 40 and near Putnam County road 625 West, the driver of the motorcycle lost control and traveled off the south side of the roadway. The driver and passenger were ejected from the cycle with both riders striking a wooden fence and drainage culvert. The pursuit was approximately 8.5 miles. Neither rider was found wearing a helmet by medical personnel, although one helmet was found on the ground at the scene.

The deceased driver was identified as David L. Godsey, age 28, of Brazil, IN. (Family notified)
Putnam County Chief Deputy Coroner David Brown was on the scene and preliminarily determined Godsey died of blunt force trauma. Toxicology results are pending and Godsey did not have a valid Indiana driver’s license.

The passenger was identified as Jolene D. McCall, age 25, of Terre Haute, IN. She was airlifted to Methodist Hospital by AirEvac Helicopter with multiple life threatening injuries.

The crash is under investigation by ISP Trooper Jonathan Cumbie. Assisting were the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Brazil Police Department, Cloverdale Police Department, Putnam County Coroner’s Office, Putnam County Operation Life, Reelsville Fire/Rescue and AirEvac Air Ambulance.

Questions concerning the Brazil Police Department officers and department policies should be directed to that agency at 812-446-2211.

Questions concerning the ISP crash investigation should be directed ISP Sergeant Joe Watts.
