Entry Description

Vigo County—At 6:55 P.M., Indiana State Police troopers and Vigo County emergency agencies responded to a multi-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near the 12 mile marker. The crash resulted in the death of one driver and critical injuries to others.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Forward Air Freight tractor-trailer from Greenville, TN. was disabled on the eastbound shoulder and awaiting a wrecker. As the wrecker service arrived, another tractor-trailer, Tri Logistics of Anaheim, CA., became disabled in the eastbound driving lane just a few feet east of the Forward Air Freight vehicle. Eastbound traffic was slowing and merging into the passing lane for the wrecker and disabled vehicles, when an eastbound 2005 Volvo tractor pulling a box trailer loaded with frozen foods and  driven by Richard L. Merry, age 51, of Hamilton, Ohio struck the rear of a red, 2002 Chevrolet S10 pickup. The red S10 was then forced into the rear of a gray 2008 Chevrolet Colorado pickup with both vehicles then striking the tractor-trailer on the shoulder.

The driver of the red S10 was Charles Loyd, age unknown, of Anderson, IN. The passenger was his wife Connie Loyd, age 48, also of Anderson, IN. The pair was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of life threatening head, facial, and internal injuries. Unknown if seatbelts were in use. The Loyds were extricated by members of the Riley Fire/Rescue Department.

The female driver of the gray 2008 Chevrolet Colorado, was not wearing a seatbelt, and was pronounced deceased at the scene by Vigo County Coroner Dr. Roland Kohr. The male passenger was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for head, facial and internal injuries. Seelyville Fire/Rescue extricated the Colorado victims.

An autopsy is scheduled for late tomorrow afternoon and more information will be released at that time. Drug and alcohol testing is underway, unknown if either played a role in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation with the primary investigator ISP Sergeant Chris Wright. Assisting were multiple ISP troopers, Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, Vigo County Coroner’s Office, Riley Fire/Rescue, Seelyville Fire/Rescue, Trans Care Ambulance Service, Lifeline and Air Evac Air Ambulances.
