Hammond, Lake County-A multiple semi crash early this morning snarled traffic as people were headed to work.

Preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 7:02 am, Indiana State Police Master Trooper Russell Hayes responded to a four semi and one vehicle crash west bound on I-80 just east of Indianapolis Boulevard.  Traffic was slowing down/stopping west bound for unknown reasons when Michael W. Hathaway, 48 of Osseo, Wisconsin, driving a 2007 Freightliner with a box trailer stopped/slowed down in the left middle lane (there are four lanes here).  Hathaway’s Freightliner is owned by Overbye out of Lakeville, Minnesota was hauling ATV’s.

Darrin Parker, 43 of Wilson, North Carolina, was driving a 2007 Freightliner with a box trailer also slowed down/stopped behind Hathaway when he was hit from behind and pushed into Hathaway’s box trailer.  Parker’s Freightliner is owned by Bay & Bay out of Rosemount, Minnesota and was hauling auto parts.  The semi and trailer sustained approximately $5,000-10,000 in damages.

Glenn D. Dantuma, 58 of Hartford, Wisconsin, was driving a 2012 Volvo semi with double box trailers when he couldn’t stop/slow down in time and hit the rear of Parker’s box trailer.  Dantuma’s Volvo is owned by UPS Freight out of Fort Wayne, Indiana and was hauling packages.  The semi and trailers sustained approximately $10,000-15,000 in damages.

Paul Javins, 32 of Lithonia, Georgia, was driving a 2003 Peterbilt semi with a box trailer when he tried to move to the left lane and hit one of Dantuma’s trailer and a GMC pick-up.  Javins’ Peterbilt is owned by JB Trucking out of Lithonia, Georgia and was hauling food products.  Javins’ semi sustained extensive damage.

Sarah Bunting, 29 of Hammond, Indiana, was driving a 2000 GMC pick-up in the left lane when Javins’ Peterbilt came over and pinned her vehicle up against the concrete median barrier wall.  Bunting was taken to Munster Community Hospital in Munster with non-life threatening injuries.  Her pick-up was totaled.

The left three lanes of traffic were closed until approximately 10:07 am, for removal of the injured and vehicles and clean-up of the roadway.

There was no load loss from any of the semis.

Dantuma and Javins were cited for Following Too Closely.
