End Date: 9/2/2012End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

Jasper County-Indiana State Police Master Trooper Scott Balch responded to a single vehicle crash on I-65 at the 210 mile marker (this is five miles south of the Rensselaer exit) which resulted in the vehicle rolling over multiple times ejecting a child.

Preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 9:50 am, this morning, Juan Leon-Tello, 45 of Cincinnati, Ohio was north bound on I-65 in the right lane in his 2002 Ford Explorer when he hit tire tread in the road.  Leon-Tello lost control went to the left, over corrected and the Explorer began to roll.  The Ford then continued rolling over off the roadway into the grassy median where it came to rest on its side.

Passer-bys had stopped to check on the Ford when they realized that the Explorer had come to rest on a seven-year old child.  They pushed the Ford up-right to unpin the child from underneath.  The seven-year old, Luis Leon-Tello was airlifted from the scene for internal injuries and taken to Arnet Clinic in Lafayette.  He was a passenger in the back seat.

Juan (driver) was taken to Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer for head and neck injuries.  He was wearing his seat belt. Front seat passenger-Miranda Perez, 39 of Cincinnati, Ohio, was also taken to Jasper County Hospital for abrasions.  She was wearing her seat belt.  Back seat passenger-Angelica Leon-Tello, 13 of Cincinnati, was partially ejected out the back passenger side window.  Angelica was taken to Jasper County with a hip injury.

The Explorer was a total loss.  Tello advised that both children were wearing seat belt although facts from the crash show if they were they could not be wearing them properly.  There was no child restraint system in the vehicle.

The Indiana State Police reminds parents that all children less than eight-years old must be properly fastened and restrained in a child restraint system.  Children between eight and sixteen must be properly fastened and restrained by a child restraint system or safety belt.
