[ISP] Traffic Stop Leads to Wanted Felon
Start Date: 8/16/2012Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 8/16/2012End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

Anderson – Last night just before midnight Trooper Jason Girt was driving on Scatterfield Road at 10th Street in Anderson when he saw a GMC Safari Van turn from 10th onto southbound Scatterfield without its headlights on.  Girt caught up to the van and saw it turn west onto 18th St., turning wide into the lane of oncoming traffic. Left of Center is one of the leading causes of serious injury crashes in Indiana.

Trooper Girt stopped the vehicle and made contact with the male driver, who was unable to produce any identification. At one point during the stop the subject attempted to drive off, but Girt was able to get to his car and get in front of the van to get it stopped a second time.

Further investigation revealed the driver’s name to be Jason Winters, age 39, of Anderson.  Winters was found to be wanted on a Felony Warrant from Marion County for Failure to Appear for Possession of Cocaine.  He was lodged in the Madison County Jail for the Class “D” Felony warrant and for Resisting Law Enforcement, Class “A” Misdemeanor.

The Indiana State Police remain committed to reducing crashes and patrolling in high crash areas.  We continue to monitor the top causes for crashes, and concentrating enforcement efforts on these causes.

This stop is also an example of how wanted criminals and illegal drugs are often discovered on traffic stops for crash causing violations. Anyone with information about illegal drug use may call the Pendleton Post at 1-800-527-4752, or the Indiana State Police Drug Tip Line at 1-800-453-4756. Tips can be made and kept anonymous.

All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
