[INDOT] US 31 Traffic Shifting to New Southbound Lanes

Entry Description

US 31 Traffic Shifting to
New Southbound Lanes

CARMEL, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) expects to shift traffic tonight and begin the next phase of US 31 construction near 146th Street.

Overnight tonight, both directions of traffic on US 31 will be shifted via median crossovers to share new southbound lanes on the west side of the highway.  The configuration will be in place before the morning commute.  Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction as the existing northbound lanes between the Monon Trail overpass and Greyhound Pass are reconstructed and upgraded to freeway standards.

Once traffic is shifted and the existing northbound pavement is closed, US 31 will pass over and no longer intersect with Range Line Road.  Range Line Road will no longer have direct access to US 31, but southbound US 31 will have access to Range Line Road via a new exit ramp expected to open at the same time.

The entrance ramp from eastbound 146th Street to southbound US 31 is expected to open as soon as possible once signs are in place on 146th Street to allow for safe pedestrian crossing at the top of the ramp.  Westbound 146th Street will gain access to the southbound US 31 entrance ramp after a traffic control signal is installed in September.

Walsh Construction, the state’s contractor for the $35 million project, is currently reconstructing the northbound Keystone Parkway ramp to US 31, which closed for 80 days on July 30.  The contract is expected to be complete in November.
