Putnam County—On Wednesday night August 1st at 11:45, Indiana State Police and Putnam County emergency agencies responded to a one vehicle rollover crash on westbound US 40 near County Road 500 West.

Preliminary investigation revealed a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer driven by 23-year-old Rohn T. Smith of Brazil, IN. was westbound on US 40, veered into the median, overcorrected and traveled into a wood area on the north side of the roadway. Smith was transported to Putnam County Hospital for minor lacerations, abrasions, and complaint of pain. He was later transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for chest injuries. Seatbelt was in use.

The crash was investigated by ISP Trooper Jonathan Cumbie. Assisting were the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and Putnam County EMS.

Earlier that evening at 9:10, Trooper Cumbie had stopped Rohn T. Smith on US 40 near County Road 25 West for speeding and Smith was issued a warning. Nearly two and one-half hours later, Smith was involved in this crash that sent him to the hospital.

Alcohol and/or drugs may be a factor in this crash, the investigation is ongoing.

Under the law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
