[ISP] Suspect Shoots at Responding Officers

Parke County—This afternoon at 4:11, a Rosedale Deputy Town Marshal and an Indiana State Police trooper responded to a domestic situation with battery at 74 South Main Street in Rosedale. As the officers arrived, two individuals were fleeing the residence and informed the officers the suspect was armed. Suddenly, the officers heard glass breaking from a north side bathroom window and then noticed the suspect was holding what appeared to be a rifle. The officers immediately took cover on the driver’s side of the trooper’s car at which time the suspect fired multiple rounds in the direction of the officers. The rounds struck the ISP commission breaking glass and traveling through the dash area, exiting on the side where the officers were taking cover. Both officers returned fire in the direction of the suspect. The suspect did not fire any additional rounds nor did the officers. Several officers from multiple nearby agencies responded to the “shots fired” call and surrounded the residence.

The Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team arrived moment’s later, gathered information, and prepared to make entry on the residence. The suspect voluntarily exited the home and surrendered without incident to state police officers at 7:06 this evening.

The suspect, Zachary T. Buza, age 19, of Rosedale, IN. was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of lacerations and contusions.  The injuries were sustained prior to Buza exiting the residence. Upon release from the hospital, Buza will be incarcerated in the Parke County Jail. Buza is initially charged with felony Attempted Murder, Criminal Recklessness with a deadly weapon and battery. Additional charges are expected.

A female, age 17, an acquaintance of Buza, was injured during the initial domestic situation along with her father, Rodney Lowe age 42, both of 74 South Main Rosedale, allegedly by Buza.They were treated at a nearby hospital and expected to be released. They were the pair who initially fled the residence and warned the officers.

The trooper and Rosedale officer sustained minor arm injuries during the exchange of gunfire, believed to be from glass or shrapnel. They received treatment at the scene. The names of the officers will not be released at this time.

Agencies assisting were the Parke and Vermillion County Sheriff’s Offices, Rockville, Clinton, and Fairview Park police departments, Indiana State Excise Police, Rosedale Fire Department, Parke County EMS.

Under the law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
