[ISP] Troopers Thwart Drug Deal
Start Date: 6/8/2012Start Time: 12:00 AM
Entry Description

Jackson County:  Wednesday, June 6 just before 2:00 p.m. Tpr. Randel Miller stopped a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu as it exited I-65 at Seymour for a minor traffic violation.  Tpr. Miller made contact with the driver later identified as 21 year old Ubaldo Lopez-Gonzalez of Indianapolis.  During the course of the traffic stop Tpr. Miller engaged in casual conversation with Lopez-Gonzalez and said Lopez-Gonzalez’s answers to questions seemed unusual.  Tpr. Miller also detected numerous indicators of possible criminal activity.  As the traffic stop continued Tpr. Miller determined Lopez-Gonzalez had never been issued a drivers’ license.   Suspecting Lopez-Gonzalez might be in possession of drugs, Tpr. Miller requested a K-9 from Seymour Police Department.  The K-9 alerted on the vehicle but no drugs could be located.

Throughout the course of the traffic stop, Lopez-Gonzalez’s cell phone rang numerous times when Tpr. Miller finally answered the phone with the intent on telling the caller to quit calling.  As soon as Tpr. Miller answered the phone the individual on the other end immediately referred to Tpr. Miller as “Angel” and asked if they would be meeting “in the same place.”  Tpr. Miller responded and told the caller “no” and gave him an alternate location.  Tpr. Miller, suspecting Lopez-Gonzalez had arranged to meet the caller for the purpose of a drug transaction turned Lopez-Gonzalez over to another trooper while Tpr. Miller responded to the alternate location.  A short time later a taxi cab arrived at the location and an individual exited the cab and upon seeing Tpr. Miller, attempted to run but Tpr. Miller advised him to stop or he would deploy his Taser Electronic Control Device after which, the subject stopped.  During their conversation the suspect told Tpr. Miller he regularly purchased heroin from Lopez-Gonzalez and that he was to meet him this afternoon.  He also told Tpr. Miller that Lopez-Gonzalez would carry the heroin in his mouth, double bagged, and would swallow it if police attempted to intervene.  Tpr. Miller confiscated over $1,000 in U.S. currency from suspect as evidence and released the suspect.

Tpr. Miller then obtained a search warrant for a search of Lopez-Gonzalez’s “body” and he was transported to Schneck Memorial Hospital in Seymour where an X-ray revealed something “unusual” in his abdomen.  He was given laxatives at the hospital and several hours later he passed seven balloons which contained brown powder heroin.

Lopez-Gonzalez was transported to Jackson County Jail where he is facing charges of Dealing in a Schedule I Controlled Substance (Class B Felony), Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance (Class C Felony), Obstruction of Justice (Class D Felony), and Operating a Vehicle While Never Licensed (Class C Misdemeanor).  The investigation also revealed Lopez-Gonzalez was a Mexican National in the United States illegally.  Immigration and Customs Enforcement was notified and have put a hold on Lopez-Gonzalez.

The name of the suspect who Lopez-Gonzalez was supposed to meet is not being released at this time.  Tpr. Miller plans to seek conspiracy charges against that individual.  Tpr. Miller was assisted on this investigation by several other troopers and Seymour Police Department.
