Vermillion County— Today, Indiana State Police Senior Trooper Ty Lightle of the Putnamville Post was working a designated high crash area on State Road 63 in northern Vermillion County and arrested two separate drivers in about a three hour span.

At 10:45a.m., Trooper Lightle clocked a blue 2012 Ford Escape southbound on SR 63 near County Road 850 North at 95 miles-per-hour in a 60 mph zone. The vehicle was stopped and the driver smelled strongly of alcohol and was physically unsteady. A chemical test at the Vermillion County Jail revealed the driver tested nearly twice the legal limit for alcohol consumption in the state of Indiana.

Arrested: Theodis Gladney, age 74, of Chicago, IL. He was preliminarily charged with Operating While Intoxicated, Endangering, class A misdemeanor; Operating While Intoxicated, class C misdemeanor; and Reckless Driving, class B misdemeanor. His bond was set at $9000.

At 1:55p.m., Lightle clocked a black 2007 Saturn 2-door southbound on SR 63 near CR 1450 North at 86 mph in a 60 mph zone. As Lightle caught up to the vehicle, the female driver had accelerated to 100 mph in a 60 mph zone. Lightle stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as Christay D. Smith, age 20, of Fort Wayne, IN. As the policy of the Vermillion County Prosecutor’s Office for drivers operating their vehicles 30 mph or more over the speed limit, Smith was incarcerated in the Vermillion County Jail for Reckless Driving, class B misdemeanor. Bond was set at $500.

The Indiana State Police has a zero tolerance policy for impaired and dangerous driving. Drivers found to be causing a substantial risk to public safety will be dealt with accordingly, including incarceration.

Under the Law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
