Overnight Ramp Closures
And Lane Restrictions at
I-465 & Allisonville Road

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and Walsh Construction, the state’s contractor, plan overnight ramp closures at the I-465 and Allisonville Road interchange beginning tonight.

Walsh crews will place drainage pipe at the Allisonville Road ramp to westbound I-465 beginning at 9 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, May 15 and tomorrow, Wednesday, May 16.  The eastbound I-465 exit ramp to Allisonville Road will be closed Thursday night, May 17.  All ramp restrictions will be lifted by 6 a.m. the following morning.

I-465 will have alternating double-lane restrictions Thursday, May 17 and Friday, May 18 for placement of barrier wall.  Eastbound I-465 will have alternating two-lane restrictions on Thursday night, and westbound I-465 will have alternating two-lane restrictions on Friday night.  These restrictions will also be between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The Allisonville Road bridge over I-465 is expected to close for reconstruction on Wednesday, May 30 for 110 days.  Businesses and commuters can learn about the project at an open house on Thursday, May 17 at the East 91st Street Christian Church, located at 6049 East 91st Street in Indianapolis.  INDOT will host an informal open house from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Formal project presentations are scheduled at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Items to be discussed include:

  • New interchange configuration – The I-465 interchange with Allisonville Road is being reconstructed into a single-point urban interchange similar to the I-465 interchange with Emerson Avenue in Beech Grove.  Traffic signals at the top of entrance and exit ramps will be consolidated into one, improving traffic flow in all directions.  The new bridge will be eight lanes wide with three through lanes and two left-turn lanes in each direction.  Both sides of the bridge will also have bike lanes.  The planned design can be viewed at
  • Construction schedule – Offline construction of the new interchange ramps is underway, with major construction set to begin May 29 after the closure of the Allisonville Road bridge over I-465.  Walsh Construction, the state’s contractor, expects to complete construction of the bridge in 110 days, with an additional 25 days of construction on the ramps and Allisonville Road once the bridge is open to traffic.  When the bridge reopens, there will be two lanes open in each direction on Allisonville Road, plus turn lanes, making the total construction time under traffic restrictions 135 days.  Walsh will receive incentives for each day they reopen the bridge earlier than the proposed 110-days.  Likewise, the contractor will be liable for monetary damages if the bridge is not reopened in 110 days.
  • Official detours and traffic mitigation – The official signed detour will use Keystone Avenue, 96th Street, I-69 and 82nd Street.  INDOT has also invested in improvements to signal timing and lane configurations on other routes to improve traffic flow during construction.  INDOT, the City of Indianapolis, the Town of Fishers and the City of Carmel will monitor and update traffic signal timing accordingly.
  • Ramp accessibility during the bridge closure – The Allisonville Road bridge over I-465 is expected to close on May 29 for 110 days.  Through traffic on Allisonville Road and left turns to access I-465 will be prohibited during the bridge closure.  The southbound Allisonville Road entrance ramp to westbound I-465 and the northbound Allisonville Road entrance ramp to eastbound I-465 are planned to be closed for 15 days.  At all times during construction, I-465 eastbound traffic will have access to southbound Allisonville Road, and I-465 westbound traffic will have access to northbound Allisonville Road.

INDOT and the 465/69 Northeast project team plans to keep people informed each step of the way throughout the project.  Businesses and commuters are encouraged to subscribe to the e-newsletter at or text DRIVE to 772937.  For regular project updates, locate INDOT’s Twitter feed and Facebook page at
