INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) and Indiana Geological Survey (IGS) are notifying Hoosiers who felt today's earthquakes to report their location on the US Geological Survey (USGS) website. A link to the form is posted at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/dyfi/.
Two earthquakes were reported by the USGS on the evening of May 10. The first earthquake, an M2.7, occurred 9 miles NNE of Vincennes at 6:07 pm. This initial earthquake was followed by an M3.1 event with an epicenter located 11 miles NNE of Vinncennes at 6:54 pm."
The Indiana Emergency Operations Center is in contact with local emergency management officials and is continuing to monitor the situation.
Public safety officials indicate the earthquakes that occurred today are a reminder that Indiana is continually exposed to the threat of earthquakes.
"There are many simple steps you can take to make your home more earthquake ready, such as placing large items on lower shelves, and hanging heavy pictures away from beds," says IDHS Executive Director Joe Wainscott. "But many other steps, like assembling a disaster kit, and establishing family communication and home evacuation plans, are the same whether you're preparing for a storm, tornadoes, or an earthquake."

Make sure everyone in your home knows how to use the fire extinguisher and age appropriate family members know how to shut off utilities.
Develop an emergency communication plan
§ In case family members are separated from one another during an earthquake (a real possibility during the day when adults are at work and children are at school), develop a plan for reuniting after the disaster.
§ Ask an out-of-state relative or friend to serve as the "family contact." After a disaster, it is often easier to call long distance. Make sure everyone in the family knows the name, address and phone number of the contact person.
§ Text messages are more likely to connect with a friend or relative rather than a phone call.
§ Phone lines will be needed for emergencies, so don’t call 911 unless you have an emergency.
§ Don’t use cell (other than texts) or land line phones unless necessary.
