[ISP] Speeding Motorist Leads Troopers to Marijuana Grow
Start Date: 5/3/2012Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 5/3/2012End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

Columbia City, IN-When Troopers stop motorists for violating any of the numerous traffic laws of this state, they often hear the question, “why don’t you go catch real criminals?”  This morning, a motorist speeding through a school zone in rural Columbia City led Troopers to an indoor marijuana growing operation and landed two “real criminals” behind bars.

According to Master Trooper Robert M. Jeffers, this morning at approximately 7:30 am, he was monitoring traffic speeds in the school zone on US 30 between County Roads 500 E and 600 E when his attention was drawn to a red Ford passenger vehicle that was traveling 57 miles per hour in the posted 40 zone, near the Coesse School.

After stopping the vehicle, Jeffers smelled an odor of marijuana coming from the passenger compartment of the Ford as he was speaking with the driver.  With the assistance of Master Trooper Gary Shenefield and his K-9 partner Beau, marijuana and paraphernalia were allegedly located inside of the vehicle.  As a result of this, a search warrant was applied for and granted for a residence in the 1400 block of E. Bridget Lane in Columbia City.  During the search, items commonly associated with an indoor growing operation were allegedly located and seized as evidence.  Also located and seized were approximately four ounces of marijuana, marijuana seeds, and psilocybin mushrooms.

Both the driver, David Allen Potter, 18 from Columbia City and his passenger, Morgan Richard Willingham, 20 from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania were taken to and incarcerated in the Whitley County Jail on preliminary charges of possession of marijuana and reckless possession of paraphernalia.  The case has been turned over to the Whitley County Prosecutor’s Office for their review.
