Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (Feb. 27 2012) – State Sen. Jim Merritt’s (R-Indianapolis) initiative to increase safety at events using temporary stage equipment passed the House of Representatives today by a vote of 92-5.
Senate Bill 273 prohibits the use of outdoor stage equipment without a permit issued by the Division of Fire and Safety or a county, city or town acting under a regulatory-approved program. Merritt’s legislation also requires applicants to conduct proper maintenance and inspection of the stage equipment.
“House passage of this legislation is good news for the many Hoosiers who regularly attend outdoor events,” Merritt said. “My sincere hope is that this initiative will help ensure temporary staging events are a safe and worry-free environment for everyone.”
Merritt’s legislation emphasizes that any applicant, engineer or architect who fills out an application for use of outdoor stage equipment will be subject to perjury if it’s proven that they have neglected to meet required regulations.
SB 273 now returns to the full Senate for final legislative consideration.
