[ISP] DNA Match Leads to Arrest of Burglary Suspect
Start Date: 2/7/2012
End Date: 2/7/2012
Entry Description

Vigo County—A recent DNA match in the Indiana DNA database led to an arrest warrant and the subsequent arrest of a burglary suspect by the Indiana State Police at Putnamville.

Christopher Crystal Jones, age 34, of Terre Haute, IN., was arrested at 11:58AM today by Indiana State Police and the US Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force. The arrest was made during a traffic stop at Lafayette Avenue and Haythorne Avenue. Jones was transported to the Vigo County Jail where he is currently being held on $25,000 bond (no 10%) for one count of Burglary, C felony and one count of Attempted Theft, D felony. The warrant was obtained through Vigo County Court Division 6.

The case originated on July 17, 2011 when Indiana State Police responded to a burglary in progress call at 237 South 23rd Street in the city of Terre Haute. The suspect broke a window on the west side of the residence and entered and exited through the opening. As the suspect fled the scene, DNA was left behind on the broken window. Indiana State Police Crime Scene Investigator Sergeant Kris Fitzgerald processed the entire scene and collected among other items, the DNA from the window. The DNA was then sent to the Indiana State Police Laboratory and a suspect’s DNA profile was developed over time. The profile was then entered into the national CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) and days later found to be consistent with a convicted offender, previously released from the Indiana Department of Corrections, Christopher Crystal Jones.

The initial response to the burglary in progress call and the subsequent criminal investigation was conducted by ISP Sergeant Jared Nicoson.

Direct any questions to Sergeant Joe Watts.

Under the Law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
