[ISP] Three Injured in Crash After Driving Through Road Block
Start Date: 1/14/2012
End Date: 1/14/2012
Entry Description

Miami County – Last night, at approximately 10:21 p.m., officers from the Indiana State Police responded to a two vehicle crash at U.S. 31 south of Miami County Road 1050 South, in which three people were injured.

The preliminary investigation by Trooper Caleb Clark revealed that U.S. 31 near County Road 1050 South was closed in both directions for the investigation and vehicle removal of an earlier personal injury crash. Two Miami County Emergency Management officers were directing traffic from northbound U.S. 31 onto State Road 18. The emergency lighting on the officers’ cars was activated and orange traffic cones had been placed across U.S. 31, indicating the road was closed.

Troy Chamberlain, 33, Peru, IN, was driving a 1999 Pontiac Montana northbound on U.S. 31. For reasons unknown, Chamberlain did not turn onto State Road 18. He continued past the Emergency Management vehicles and through the traffic cones. Chamberlain drove for approximately one mile before rear ending a semi-trailer, which was being pulled by a 2006 Kenworth semi-tractor. The semi-tractor, which was stopped in traffic due to the previous crash, was driven by John Lyons, 51, rural Rochester, IN. The trailer was empty.

The front seat occupants of the Pontiac were entrapped and had to be extricated by fire fighters from the Pipe Creek and Grissom Fire Departments. Chamberlain was transported by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Kokomo. He was later airlifted to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis. He is in stable but critical condition.  A front seat passenger in the Pontiac, Frederick McCool, 28, Louisville, KY, was transported by Samaritan Helicopter to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. He has a severe head injury. A rear seat passenger in the Pontiac, Kelly Mercado, 32, Peru, IN, was transported by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Hospital with a complaint of back pain. She was treated and released. Lyons was not injured.

Lyons, Chamberlain, and McCool were all wearing a seat belt, which Trooper Clark believes helped reduce the severity of their injuries. It is not known if Mercado was wearing a seat belt.

The rear hazard lights on the semi-trailer were functioning prior to the crash.

This crash is still under investigation. Blood draw results from Chamberlain and Lyons are pending.
